All Creatures
All Creatures Great & Small
Special Contribution by Jessica Garrett from Garrett Veterinary Services
Do you love animals? At Garrett Veterinary Services, it’s no surprise that we would label ourselves “animal lovers.” But do you know who else loves animals more than any of us ever could? Of course, the answer is God, the Creator of all things! The Scriptures are full of evidence of God’s love for His creatures as well as commands for humans to properly attend to them.
The Creation Account in Genesis shows God taking special care to create each type of animal “according to its kind.” This was not random chance, but rather was specific design. He then went on to give man the responsibility of caring for them (Genesis 1:26). Even after mankind proved themselves to be so sinful and defiant that God chose to send a flood to destroy the Earth, our Heavenly Father made plans to save the animals along with Noah’s family (Genesis 6:19-20). How amazing is that?
God not only loves the animals He has created, but He also cares about how they are treated. One of the most popular verses in the veterinary field is Proverbs 12:10 “Whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast, but the mercy of the wicked is cruel.” Another well-loved animal proverb is Proverbs 27:23 “Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds…” There are even specific instructions on caring for working livestock, including not muzzling the ox while it treads out the grain (Deuteronomy 25:4).
I could go on and on with more references in both Testaments, but I encourage you to explore the Scriptures yourself. As a veterinarian, if I am ever feeling overwhelmed, I am blessed to be able to look back at these verses and remember the value in what I do. God LOVES animals. He created them for His pleasure as well as ours, and we vets have the honor of helping provide the best care for all creatures great and small!
When you need veterinary care for your pets or livestock, we hope you will think of us at Garrett Veterinary Services. 2122 W. Franklin St. Elkhart, IN 46516. Call us at 574-355-3322 to schedule your animals’ care.
