NEW YORK-- Palestine is now a non-member state. Despite US and Israeli opposition, the United Nations voted overwhelmingly on the measure. It passed 138-9, with 41 abstaining. The new status now grants Palestinians more weight in peace talks with Israel and gives it a chance to join UN agencies and International bodies.
