There's a major fallout over a key Republican Indiana senator's decision to leave the Statehouse to attend a political event. Democrat House Speaker Pat Bauer's claims that he decided to end plans for an early adjournment last week partly because GOP Senator Brandt Hershman left negotiations to attend a Lincoln Day dinner has sparked an angry response from Senate majority leaders. Senate President Pro Tem David Long is asking Bauer for an apology, but Bauer says Long should not hold his breath. Hershman is running for the congressional seat open with Fourth District U.S. House Republican Steve Buyer's decision not to run for another term. Governor Mitch Daniels says Hershman is the scapegoat for Democrats choosing to walk off the job. Long says the Senate will hold meetings today and tomorrow. The House is set to reconvene on Wednesday with several issues still to be ironed out before lawmakers end their work for the year.
